Les Dejeuner Sur L'Herbe by Edouard Manet

Les Dejeuner Sur L'Herbe by Edouard Manet was not a typical painting for its time. Two fully clothed men are sitting with a woman who is completely naked. It is not unique to put a naked woman in a painting, but it is unique to put a woman in a painting just to stir up controversy. By placing the naked woman next to men in clothes, Manet has broke the tradition of only having naked women in paintings if the woman is from mythology or if the woman is divine. Another reason to believe the woman exists to stir up controversy is because she looks directly at the viewer of the painting. This conveys that she is meant to be noticed easily and right away.
