Les Dejeuner Sur L'Herbe by Edouard Manet

Image
The first thing I noticed when looking at this painting was the lady in the middle that does not have any clothing on next to the two men that are fully clothed. I also noticed how the colors of this painting are very dark besides the women and her blue items of clothing that lay beside her. The women also appears very confident being completely nude while among the two men and the women in the background while having lunch in the forest. I think Manet painted this in order to be different compared to modern society during this era.

Manet - Dejeuner sur l'Herbe

Image
Edouard Manet painted "Dejeuner sur l'Herbe" (Luncheon on the Grass) in 1862. It pictures two men and a woman, presumably having their lunch, and a women in the background. This painting was said to be controversial in its time. The one women sitting with the two men appears to be fully naked. While the two men are having a conversation, the women looks to be staring at the viewer. I like painting for the fact that she seems so out of place in what would otherwise be a normal scene. Its almost like she is aware that there is someone looking at the painting.

My first thought when I saw Edouard Manet's painting Les Dejuener Sur' L'Herbe was that he broke barriers. The painting he portrayed does not display something one would have seen in 1863. The nude women in the painting is not portrayed as a divine figure; she is just a naked women having lunch. Observers find her naked next to two well dressed gentlemen. It is as if Manet used the space to deliver a message that women are in control of their bodies. He portrayed the women as though it was her choice to be naked in a time where that was not the "norm." This concept is felt as her hat and polka dot dress lay beside her. It is also felt as the women in the background bathes fully clothed in the river. Although the women is placed in the background she is the same size as the three people placed in the foreground. Manet's placement of the women in the river emphasizes the nudity of the women in the foreground. When I look at the painting I feel as thoug

Manet: Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe

Manet's Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe or Luncheon on the Grass, portrays a naked woman next to two fully clothed men. The woman is much brighter than the rest of the painting which draws your eye to her. This painting was done in 1863, when at that time, this kind of painting would be considered controversial. By portraying the women as nude, it makes her more vulnerable than the two men sitting next to her. The men are also dressed nicely, so they are seen as more mature and higher class than the women. There is also a woman in the back wearing white and the cherries in front of the naked women which both symbolize purity.

Les Dejeuner Sur L'Herbe by Edouard Manet

Les Dejeuner Sur L'Herbe by Edouard Manet was not a typical painting for its time. Two fully clothed men are sitting with a woman who is completely naked. It is not unique to put a naked woman in a painting, but it is unique to put a woman in a painting just to stir up controversy. By placing the naked woman next to men in clothes, Manet has broke the tradition of only having naked women in paintings if the woman is from mythology or if the woman is divine. Another reason to believe the woman exists to stir up controversy is because she looks directly at the viewer of the painting. This conveys that she is meant to be noticed easily and right away.

The first aspect that I noticed when looking at this painting was the nude woman amongst the clothed men. This painting is untraditional, not because of the nude woman, but because she is not the typical nude woman painted at the time. Those portrayed in the nude were typically divine/godlike beings. The colors are harsh as is the flow of the people and trees. I think Manet painted this with the goal of breaking classical standards. People were intimidated by his work and considered it obscene which only helped him break boundaries and create works of art.

Édouard Manet: Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe

In this painting, titled " Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe" by Manet, is translated to Luncheon on the Grass. This is a french painting from the year 1863. The painting illustrates a naked woman sitting beside two fully dressed men having a picnic in a forest. In the distance there is another woman (who is dressed) that seems to be gathering water. The nude woman is looking directly at the painter while the two men are preoccupied in their conversation. The woman also seems as as she is not the least bit embarrassed or uncomfortable being the only one nude at this luncheon. This controversial painting caused outrage in the French society, seeing a painting of a nude woman who was not a classic mythological figure. Brave Mr. Manet is now known as the Father of Modernism.

This painting was painted by Manet which was considered to be a French painting. Many different things are happening but the main thing that would probably stand out to many people is the naked woman causally eating lunch with two dressed men. She seems to be the most important role in this painting since she is looking right at us while the men are looking away. On the side, you can see food in a basket and her clothing to the side. This might be a sign of what her usual job is since she doesn't seem ashamed.

This painting titled  "Les Dejeuner Sur L'Herbe" by Edouard Manet was a painting that fell very interesting to me. When I look at this picture, I see many different things happening. To start off, the first thing to catch my eye, was a woman naked on a luncheon with two nicely dressed men. She is staring right at the painter with nothing but a feel good look on her face. She seems..Okay with what is going on. You can notice in the corner how the fruits, bread, etc are in the basket just right next to her removed clothing. Due to the clothed woman in the back, I feel as though the artist is trying to say something about nudity in this year of 1863. Yes the woman looks reserved in the back, but the naked woman in the front looks like this is something that is casual for her. If you pay attention to her body language, she is, in my eyes, comfortable. The men casually talking and all of them enjoying the time being spent together. One last thing that I noticed was that thi

Les Dejeuner Sur L'Herbe ( Luncheon  on the Grass) Created By: Edward Manet Written By: Madison Herley In the painting " Les Dejeuner Sur L'Herbe" created by painter Edouard Manet, which can be translated into a luncheon on the grass. This painting illustrates a naked women looking directly into the eyes on the painter while her belongings are scattered on the left side of the painting. There are two men dressed in sophisticated clothing while sitting next to the women. Both of these men look to be having a conversation with each other. While the one man directly next to the naked women seems to be looking dazed at something else very close to the other man who is interacting with a conversation. All three of these people are sitting down on the grass in the woods and having a picnic. In the far background, there is another woman who is looking to scooping water from the meadow.  I think this painting is interesting because it was created in the year

I took French in high school, so I have an idea about the French culture and the language. The French most definitely love their art. I like how Manet occupied all aspects of the painting with significantly different subjects. The foreground contains a picnic basket filled with fruits and bread, which the French love. In the middleground , there is a naked woman with dressed men. The woman is the only one who seems aware of the artist or the audience. Today, there are many nude beaches in France, but this type of nudity may have been new for Manet's audience at the time. In the background, there is a more modestly dressed woman. This painting seems like three paintings in one. I also like how the subjects appear illuminated in comparison to the scenery, which appears subdued.

Diane Arbus

Image
I found this particular photograph, by Diane Arbus, to be most intriguing because it is unlike any photograph I have ever seen before. I would be less interested if this was a painting/drawing because it would not necessarily mean there is an actual man like this in the world. It appears as if the male on the left is a giant. I assume the woman and man to the right are parents and the giant is their son. The giant is hunched over, looking quite uncomfortable. I believe he is hunched over because when he stands up straight, his head touches the ceiling. After researching, I found that this photo is actually a Jewish giant at home with his parents in the Bronx.

Diane Arbus

Image
Diane Arbus was a photographer who traveled around the world during the time when Nazi’s were taking over.   She realized that photography was her passion and she worked for a New York magazine.   She went around looking for not beautiful people but interesting people which I think is a very interesting concept.   In the photo above shows a rather young boy about to walk into the middle of the street unsupervised and very skinny.   If you look in the background of the photo you cant even see a store or any other human being so I wondered where he was going or was he going to school or go to a job.   This photo has so many questions to it yet its so simple and that truly amazes me.

Diane Arbus: The “Photographer Of Freaks”

Image
Diane Arbus was a talented photographer, she captured images of the imperfect and showed real people. I believe in the beauty of differences, because we aren't made to be made to be the same and this shows truth of humanity. Thankfully, Model inspired her to pursue her art and we get to experience purity.

Diane Arbus - Child With Toy Hand Grenade

Image
This is understandably one of Diane Arbus' most significant images. It captures the strangeness of people and the human form she was largely known for. Arbus aimed to express society and those she encountered on the street who maybe did not appeal to other photographers. Most people would consider her photography out of the ordinary due to the unusual nature of her subjects. Some may even hesitate to explore the work of Diane Arbus, but Lisette Model took an interest in Diane and gave her the confidence she needed to pursue her unusual portraits. The black and white aspect of her photographs draws attention to the subject of the image and makes them the main focus. This photograph in particular is of a young boy holding toy grenades somewhere outside. His facial expression and the hanging strap of his overalls add character to the picture. I particularly like that the boy is the main focus with little else in the background to distract from the subject in focus. Some might also

I find these pictures interesting because many of her photos depict not only wealthy people but also those marginalized in society. She gave all people a voice and showed the world the different faces of reality.

I was intrigued by this particular photo that Diane captures named, "Woman Caring Child in Central Park", because of the perspective the photo was taken in. I love how her main focus is the woman and child, blurring out the background I am assuming purposely to make them her focal point of this picture. Also, I like how the mother is holding her child oddly different than the usual way a child of his age is likely to be held by a parent. She is almost cradling him like an infant when the child is of obvious age older than an infant or toddler. The scene looks like it is taking place during fall or winter, because of the way the woman and child are layered in clothing. I thought this was one of Diane's softer looking pictures that she has taken, yet captures powerful facial expressions and can tell many different stories all inside of this single captured photo. Diane Arbus Photography

Image
This photograph is a good representation of Diane Arbus' photography. She took black and white photographs of random strangers who stood out to her and broke social norm standards. The above photograph is a good depiction of this because of the numerous tattoos that cover this mans skin. In society, there is a stigma that tattoos are unprofessional and frowned upon. So Diane Arbus was drawn to him.

Diane Arbus

Image
Diane Arbus was a photographer who would take pictures of people living their normal lives. Many of her photographs are of people not posing. This photo above, shows two people who may not be the best looking models in the world, but are extremely happy with whatever they are doing at the moment. Diane Arbus made a career out of photographing people who were not your average person. This included dwarfs, giants, transgender, people, nudists, and circus performers.

Simple Expressions of Humanity.

Image
Diane Arbus, able to capture humanity in its simplest moment. Whether it was someone walking across the street or a day at the beach, every moment captured felt genuine. The expressions on the faces of her subjects always felt genuine.

Diane Arbus "Child With Toy Hand Grenade"

Image
Diane Arbus was an American photographer who became interested in art at a young age. Her first camera was a gift from her husband Allan. Arbus was influenced by Lisette Model, a street photographer of the early to mid-20th century. The article states how Model helped Arbus find the confidence to make the photographs she wanted. Most of her photos were taken during the 1950s and 1960s. She took black and white photos of people who she found unique and different. This photograph was taken in 1962, in Central Park. While taking this photo, Arbus was engaging with the little boy while moving around him, she was trying to find the right angle. The other photos she took of this boy shows the way he was acting in front of the camera. The little boy, Colin Wood, is the son of the tennis player, Sidney Wood. While being interviewed, Colin said does not remember Arbus taking the photo of him but he remembers the reason he made the face. He said that he was imitating a face he had seen in

Diane Arbus: "The Jewish Giant"

Image
During the 1900s, there was an American photographer by the name of Diane Arbus who took photographs of moments that most people would consider odd or strange. Shown above is a photograph of hers known as "The Jewish Giant". I chose to talk about this photograph of hers because it looked so strange to me that I did not believe it was real at first. It seems Diane's purpose for taking this photograph and possibly all of her photographs is to capture something so stra nge that it becomes disturbing to look at. When speaking about this photograph, Diane said " You know how every mother has nightmares when she’s pregnant that her baby will be born a monster? I think I got that in the mother’s face. " I agree with Diane's opinion, as the disturbed face of the mother truly does compliment her disturbingly  sized son.

Diane Arbus

Image
She is so expressive and conveys so much using so little.  She is know for her photographs of the odd and while this photograph is more of the tame side it still is very much her. You have to think where are they? how do they know each other? what are both of their faces saying. they both look like their conveying very different emotions but its really up for the viewers interpretation.

Diane Arbus: Child running in the park, N.Y.C., 1959

Image
Diane Arbus was an American photographer from the 1900's who captured black-and-white portraits. Her portraits displayed a wide range of people from circus performers to the mentally ill. Arbus's photographs documented "normal" life. It was as if Arbus wandered the streets where she would meet people who she would eventually capture in a photograph.       Prior to today I had never heard of Diane Arbus. I enjoy the realism among her photographs. That is why I chose the above picture. I loved how the little girl looked as though she was soaring. The girl looks as if she did not have a care in the world. Diane Arbus took people in everyday situations and made them something more. That is what I loved about the Child running in the park.

Diane Arbus

Image
I never heard of or viewed the work of Diane Arbus until recently. After looking through her work for the first time, I do like what I've seen. To me, her photography looks as if she caught these people in the middle of what they were doing, almost candidly, with just enough time to pose. I specifically like this photograph named Lady at a Masqued Ball . I like this photo because there is a certain mystery behind it. I can tell the woman is an older woman, maybe 40s or 50s, but I don't know anything about her. I do know that she is smiling and most likely having a good time, but after doing research I read that Diane Arbus would photograph people who displayed loneliness or boredom. She may have not look very happy when Diane Arbus decided to take the picture.

Image
Diane Arbus was an American photographer from the 1900's. All of the photographs she has captured are in black and white and of other people which make them unique. It was difficult to pick just one that was my favorite but I decided to go with was Girl with a pointy hood and white school bag at the curb. I like this photograph because it was very simple. There could be a meaning behind it that isn't portrayed or it could just be a little girl walking home from school. It's kind of mysterious too and that is why I chose it.

Diane Arbus: Identical twins, Roselle, NJ, 1967

Image
Diane Arbus is an American contemporary photographer who was a student of the street photographer, Lisette Model. Arbus was famous for her square formatted photographs of marginalized people who are perceived as "ugly" by society. The majority of Arbus' photos were of transgenders, nudists, and circus performers. Arbus became known as the "photographer or freaks". I chose this photo because of the many strange photographs taken by Diane Arbus, this photo named Identical Twins  stood out to me (and reminded me of the horror movie The Shining) . Theres just something unsettling about an old black & white photo of twins.

Diane Arbus

Image
Diane Arbus is an American photographer that is highly known for her art. She likes to take pictures of street people, transvestites, nudists, and carnival performers. I picked this photo by Diane Arbus because this picture defiantly caught my eye since you don't see this every day. The lady in the picture seems that she is going through a terrible illness, like cancer. Even though she is going through a terrible illness, she is still enjoying her cigarette and going with the flow.

Diane Arbus Photography: Man With Tattoos At Bar

Image
Diane Arbus Photography: Man With Tattoos At Bar Written By: Madison Herley Diane Arbus along with other contemporary artists were inspired by one of the most prominent street photographers of the early to mid 20th century, Lisette Model. Arbus tended to photograph portraits of lower class people, people she saw on the streets, and strangers. Thus, Arbus wanted to show the beauty within everyone.  I choose this photo above because some people do not appreciate the beauty that comes within the art of tattoos. This photo to myself describes a lonely man, covered in tattoos, sitting at a table at a bar with a drink, and pack of cigarettes. Most photographers tend to take photos are individuals who do not have tattoos covered in their body. Therefore, I like how Arbus went outside the box and took a photo of an individual who wasn't the ideal model for every photographer.

Diane Arbus is an American Photographer. Diane is highly known for portraits of individuals on the margins of society, such as street people, transvestites, nudists, and Carnival performers. The photograph I decided on is titled as untitled#4. What I liked most about this photograph is a Halloween vibe to it. I'm very curious if the female on the right hand side of the photograph hair is made of hay or spaghetti.

Diane Arbus Child Crying

Image
Model once said, "You cannot imagine how fantastically boring it can be to look hour after hour at a beautiful body. But an ugly body can be fascinating." Arbus was influenced to create a different view in photography, capturing the reality of society... not what we want to believe society is or "expectations". This photo says a lot in itself, a very adorable child, crying in 1967. Most photos anyone expects to see of children are candid laughs, or big happy smiles. But in this case, the more frequent "ugly" moments that occur in childhood was captured. Crying is the reality of what children are born doing before they learn to develop into young adults that can express themselves verbally. This picture tells me that not all photographs of infants need to be all smiles and laughs, it can still be a very beautifully taken photo of sweet child in a not so glory state. Photographs like Arbus's speak so loud for the brutal society we live in and how eve

Diane Arbus : Barefoot Child Jumping Rope

Image
Diane Arbus captured a wide variety of people. She often photographed the less represented side of society. I like this picture because it is a representation of the innocence in the world. This girl is just jumping rope barefoot . She probably doesn't care that her feet could be getting dirty or that her dress looks a little short. Society finds away to take innocence away, but Arbus has captured it in a photograph.
