Manet's Les Dejeuner Sur L'herbe
I took French in high school, so I have an idea about the French culture and the language. The French most definitely love their art. I like how Manet occupied all aspects of the painting with significantly different subjects. The foreground contains a picnic basket filled with fruits and bread, which the French love. In the middleground , there is a naked woman with dressed men. The woman is the only one who seems aware of the artist or the audience. Today, there are many nude beaches in France, but this type of nudity may have been new for Manet's audience at the time. In the background, there is a more modestly dressed woman. This painting seems like three paintings in one. I also like how the subjects appear illuminated in comparison to the scenery, which appears subdued.
