Luncheon on the Grass (1863)
Luncheon on the Grass painted by Edouard Manet in 1863 caused much controversy. There is a nude woman as well as a woman who is in minimal clothing in the background among fully two dressed males. There is a lot to take away from this painting including the juxtaposition of feminine and masculine, naked and clothed as well as the paint colors Manet used (white and dark.) It also appears the nude woman is the only one aware of their viewer which I think represents that she is not ashamed of her body.
