Frida Kahlo: The two Fridas

The two Fridas, painted by Frida Kahlo in 1939, is a double portrait of the painter, one who is in a European style dress, and one who is in a traditional Tehuana dress. This painting is interesting to me because of the multiple stories behind the painting, and also because the two Frida's are connected by a blood vessel. Some say this is a depiction of Fridas double heritage, German and Mexican, and some say it is an interpretation that the Tehuana Frida is the one who was adored by her husband Diego Rivera, while the European Frida is the one that was rejected by him. 1939 was the year that Frida divorced Diego, although they remarried a year later. Frida said this painting was a memory of a childhood imaginary friend.
