Frida

Frida Kahlo painted this Self Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird in 1940. I chose this painting because I liked the background of the leaves and animals. There are animals surrounding her and the thorns around her neck are piercing her skin yet she wears a calm expression. She is enduring the pain and this could reflect the pain she felt throughout her life from her accident. Birds often represent freedom, but Kahlo painted this hummingbird black. This could be symbolic of her pain and her restrictions due to multiple surgeries stemming from her accident. Overall, I enjoyed this portrait before even reading about all of the hidden details and signs of symbolism. The colors in the background and her face are very vibrant compared to those of the animals surrounding her.
