RECUERDO (Memory)

In this self-portrait "Recuerdo" by Frida Kahlo in 1937 it really expresses her internal pain through visual/physical pain. The pain she felt during the making of this painting was the pain of heart break, represented by the heart on the ground making literal rivers of blood and the tears on her face. At the time her Diego had an affair with a woman named Cristina. She was filled with so much misery and resented Deigo for cheating that she chopped off her hair changed her clothing style and became anew. I also noticed that in the painting the clothes is from her youth and her traditional Tehuana dress, both with only one arm and herself with none. I wasn't so sure she was still held together by them because the red string holding both outfits up and represents the spiritual bond between them. Lastly, her foot is placed in the water because she was undergoing surgery and couldn't feel it. Kahlo is an amazing artist that had a powerful story line connected to all her works.
