Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird, 1940
In this painting Frida is facing the viewers wearing a necklace of thorns which is being held by a black monkey. There is black cat on her right and a humming bird hanging from the thorns. In this painting, Frida used a lot of symbolism to express her feelings. For instance, a humming bird usually symbolize freedom and life, especially the colorful ones that are always above flowers. But in this painting the humming bird is black and lifeless. Some people believed that the bird symbolized Kahlo herself seeing as she spent most of her life in physical pain after the bus accident. After multiple surgeries she spent many years in bed recovering and can not have any kids. This was a painting that basically expressed her suffering. Kahlo said she never painted dreams, she painted her reality.
