Franz Marc: The Unfortunate Land of Tyrol

This is a painting of a desolate town, which seems abandoned and creepy. Each colors Marc used in his painting had a purpose and meaning. Here we have a mix of black and dark colors with many light colors. This was painted shortly after a war and seems to represent a war stricken area. In the top corner there is a bird with outstretched wings and a rainbow. This is similar to the dove and rainbow in the bible after the great flood. This most likely represents new hope and good things to come.
