White Wave Jackson Pollock

Image
I really like the colors used. it like blues of every shade swirled into one work of art. every shade imaginable all in one, blue blue of the sea mixed with the blue of a sky.the blues merged into a wave to hug a sphere almost as if the sea kissed the moon. yellows and whites spewing from the moon into a mass of purples and magenta. i wonder why the drizzle of orange was chosen to solidify it all.

Jackson Pollock

Image
I really liked this Pollock painting a lot for a few reasons. I like how he mixed the colors and the way each swirl seems to follow a certain kind of pattern. I personally think that its "messiness" is actually what makes it so original and unique. I also believe that each person that views this painting is meant to have their own personal perception as to what the painting actually is. Perhaps the painting isn't supposed to be anything specific at all. Either way, I really liked this one.

Franz Marc, Deer in the Forest

Image
Franz Marc created  Deer in the Forest  in 1913/1914, and was an oil on canvas painting. The painting had many defining features due to the intensity of colors. Colors like the red, green, blue, yellow and even black. The painting had a doubled theme of d eer and landscape. I love this painting because at first glimpse it is only a ray of colors then turns into something more. Franz Marc was a German painter and printmaker. Most of his paintings was in the style of Expressionism. I loved how he defined his paintings, "I try to intensify my sensitivity for the organic rhythm of all things; I seek pantheist empathy with the vibration and flow of the blood of nature-in the trees, in the animals, in the air . . . I see no happier medium for the 'Animalization' of art, as I would like to call it, than the animal picture."  I believe this does represent what most of his paintings really are.

Jackson Pollack Mural 1943

Image
This painting is called Mural by American artist Jackson Pollack done in 1943. This painting was done during and is classified as an Abstract Expressionism Art piece. You can tell this is abstract expressionism because this painting simply does not create a specific 'thing'- such as a portrait or a landscape. This painting consists of lines that vary in width and color. Accompanying the strokes are some blotches of paint as if he splattered it on by flicking a paint brush. What is so fascinating about abstract art is that it can be interrupted in many ways, I believe more so than 'normal art.' With that being said I did research and these are not just random strokes of paint on a canvas. This painting suggests that there are several human figures walking or possibly birds or letters and numbers with broken swirls of various colors.

Greyed Rainbow - 53

Image
This piece by I an abstract painting by Jackson Pollock. It was created in 1953 and is called Greyed Rainbow. Out of what i found, this one stood out the most. It is mostly black and white but it also has a touch of color to it at the bottom. I like the splatter paintings he does because it gives a cool effect.

Jackson Pollack

Image
I like this painting because it's looks like the inner machinations of my mind which are an enigma. It's very colorful and dynamic that seems to be ever changing.

Jackson Pollak

Image
The Deep is an abstract expressionist painting by American painter Jackson Pollock. Pollock here uses a black-white combination of dripping paint, only to break it down with touches of yellow. There are many interpretations of the meaning of the painting, and painting's name, most often as deep and profound void or hole, a vicious cut or dying man, hence the name The Deep.

Jackson Pollack "Mural" (1943)

Image
Title: "Mural" Created By: Jackson Pollack Written By: Madison Herley I choose the painting "Mural" created by Jackson Pollack in the year of 1943. This painting is considered an abstract art piece and was created in the Abstract Expressionism era. The " Mural" can be found at the University of Iowa Museum of Art. Furthermore, this painting is the largest creation Pollack made and is 20 feet long. I was drawn to this painting because of all the colors used and the lines and shapes in the painting were all going in a different direction. I love how Pollack didn't necessarily create a portrait, landscape, animal, or thing. But, Pollack just used thick lines to create an abstract piece. If you look closely at the painting you can see several human figures walking, letters, and some numbers as well. If you look at the swirls of black and white you can see those objects listed above more easily than just looking at the painting as a whol...

Slow Swirl @ the Edge of the Sea (1944)

Image
I found Mark Rothko interesting because as I researched him he moved through many art styles throughout his life. When you first research him you find pieces filled with color portraying squares or rectangles. However, the more I researched the more I saw the progression of his work. Beginning with landscapes and still life, where he eventually progressed to the abstract. I honestly have no idea about what is happening in the above paintin. I just loved how whimsical it felt. The piece displays muted tones with pops of color. Objects and lines are even displayed that add to it's whimsical style/feel. When I researched Slow Swirl at the Edge of the Sea, 1944 he painted it while "courting" his second wife Mary Beistel. So, many people interpret it as almost magical and mythical. As if two figures are watching the sunset.

Mark Rothko

Image
Mark Rothko was an abstract expressionist who worked primarily with the idea of color field. This is  Rothko's oil on canvas painting Red, Orange, Tan and Purple. Every color, shape, and size in his color field painting have a purpose. nothing is done by accident. His thought process was to take out any objects in a painting that would distract from the feeling. HE wanted his painting to be pure emotion, and they were very large so the viewer could almost amerce themselves into the painting. The feelings I get from this painting are warm and soothing.

Eyes in the Heat: Jackson Pollock

Image
Jackson Pollock was an abstract painter that took part in the abstract expressionist movement. His most famous works are his splatter paint works. The one that stood out to me the most was Eyes in the Heat, 1946. I picked this one because there were so many colors and paint strokes that it really caught my eye. He painted this one during his Drip Period where he made mostly drip paintings. He applied the paints straight from the tube onto the canvas and swirled the colors around. He expressed his emotions through these paintings and although all we see is mix of colors swirled together on a canvas, there is a much deeper meaning behind it.

Jackson Pollock: Shimmering Substance

Image
I chose this paining, Shimmering Substance, by Jackson Pollock because the brightness and summer-y glow attracted me. This is the brightest color scheme used by Pollock throughout his entire career. This painting is currently on display at the museum of modern art (MoMa) in NYC. This painting was on of the first "drip paintings" that Pollock introduced to the world, where he applied the paint directly to the canvas and used a pallet knife and his bare fingers. This technique was very unpopular when he first did this in 1946

Pollock

Image
Jackson Pollock  was an influential American painter, and the leading force behind the abstract expressionist movement in the art world. During his lifetime, Pollock enjoyed considerable fame and notoriety. Jackson Pollock's greatness lies in developing one of the most radical abstract styles in the history of modern art, detaching line from color, redefining the categories of drawing and painting, and finding new means to describe pictorial space.

Yellow Islands by Jackson Pollock

Image
Yellow Islands is a popular painting created by Jackson Pollock in 1952. Jackson Pollock is an American abstract expressionist artist, best known for his use of action painting. Pollock exerted the paint by using a syringe or by pouring it in coats onto a commercial cotton canvas. By pouring the paint in this way, he created numerous rhythmic abstract artworks. This particular technique was used to create  Yellow Islands. The color of the commercial cotton canvas used for this painting is beige. The beige color is shown in small areas throughout the painting. My favorite part of this painting is the small areas that are highlighted in yellow. That is where the title, Yellow Islands , comes from. These areas add a sprinkle of color to a dark black and white painting. All of the shapes that are formed are unidentifiable. I chose this painting because it expressed a feeling of melancholy to me. Most of Pollocks paintings are much more colorful, yet this one ...

Franz Marc Foxes 1913

Image
I chose this piece by Franz Marc Foxes because this one stood out to me compared to the other pieces or art by him. The reason this one stood out is because the foxes were distorted and the colors were more neutral compared to his other pieces. I like Franz Marc's artwork because many of his paintings are of animals and are all unique in their own ways. Many of his paintings are very colorful and stand out and the colors in his paintings all had meaning, for example blue was meant to portray masculinity, yellow was meant for joy and femininity and red was meant to show violence. I liked this painting the most because of the way he distorted the painting and his use of colors.

Convergence 1952 by Jackson Pollock

Image
I like this painting by Pollock because of it's use of color. It is abstract, but still beautiful. The color is in the foreground, while the background appears to contain the black streaks. His works look so original and would be hard to completely duplicate.

Mural, 1943 by Jackson Pollock

Image
This painting by Jackson Pollock was created in 1943. I found this painting of all paintings the most fascinating. When I look a this AT FIRST you see lines and squiggles, colors, and then when you really start to look, from my opinion you can see bodies, faces, people connected. I found that these types of artwork are so brilliant because your not just giving someone a painting of general things, you are giving them  something to perceive on their own. Many people might not agree with me on what I see when I look at this painting, they may find something different, but that I feel is the beauty of this type of artwork. I look forward to seeing more of these and working on them in studio time.

Dog Lying in the Snow 1911

Image
In the eyes of Franz Mac animals are purer than people. what would be purer than an animal who only knows instinct, not right from wrong. Environmentally what is purer than snow? a beautiful, individual, patterns of frozen precipitation. its a blank canvas for whatever the world has to throw at it, dirt, cold coffee, footprints. Why does the dog look so hurt? it it hurt emotionally? is it hurt physically? why is it by its self?

Frank Marc

Image
I liked this photo because of the selection of colors. I liked how the piggies blend in the art work.

Franz Mark- The Fox

Image
I like this painting because the abstract design brings together the idea of the foxes. The cubism style provides dimension and life to the artwork. I also admire the variations in colors and use of different shapes.

Franz Marc: Dog lying in the Snow

Image
I chose this painting, Dog lying in the Snow, 1911, by Franz Marc because I thought it was interesting that he only used the primary colors yellow and blue, and their combination making the color green. I personally love dogs, and this is a painting of his very own dog, Russi. In this painting, Marc wanted to portray the harmony of the dog with nature. Marc loved painting animals because he felt they were more pure and "closer to God." He described man as "ugly."

Fate of the Animals

Image
Franz Marc created his Fate of the Animals during 1913. This painting was the start of Marc sense of Apocalypse and doom within his works. Marc started to see animals as human and realize the ugliness within them also occurs with them. The color usage of this paint is very eye catching. However, Marc usage of blended shapes were also a big component within his creation. Marc was very clever on hiding the animals within the shapes, you can only pick them out if you see the painting close. I can only spot as least ten animals but there probably is more than ten.

The Yellow Cow -1911

Image
Franz Marc is one of my favorite artists so far. I love his use of color throughout the piece. When I researched The Yellow Cow, 1911 it said that this piece was a tribute to his second marriage to Maria Franck. The cow was supposed to represent the safety he felt within their union. His use of warm tones elicits a positive feelings. Even as the bull rears in the image the colors make the viewer feel safe. I truly love his detail. In the background the mountains over look the bull and the sky is perfectly colored for a sunset. Franz Marc truly expresses his wants throughout each piece with his diversity of color choices.

Franz Marc

Image
I  chose this photo because i love the shading and colors of the pastel.  I like how the background doesn't really make sense color wise but it still looks like the wolf is laying on the ground.

Franz Marc - Renard

Image
My favorite piece I found by Marc Franz was called Renard. It was created in 1911. I like the contrast of the dark fox on top of the bright background. I also like the simplicity of the background and the bright colors. The simple and choice of colors makes it hard to make out what is behind the fox, but i like that aspect of it.

Franz Marc: The Unfortunate Land of Tyrol

Image
This is a painting of a desolate town, which seems abandoned and creepy. Each colors Marc used in his painting had a purpose and meaning. Here we have a mix of black and dark colors with many light colors. This was painted shortly after a war and seems to represent a war stricken area. In the top corner there is a bird with outstretched wings and a rainbow. This is similar to the dove and rainbow in the bible after the great flood. This most likely represents new hope and good things to come.

Franz Marc- The Fox

Image
Growing up, Franz Marc wanted to become a priest. But then he began his studies on philosophy. In 1900 he took some painting classes at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. Around that time, Paris was the center of art, that is where young artists went to study modern artists such as Claude Monet, Van Gough, and Paul Gauguin. Marc took a few trips to Paris because he was influenced by modern French painters. I chose this painting because it is the only that actually caught my eye. Although this was painted during the cubist movement, I still like how Marc made it seem as if the viewer is looking at the fox through broken glass.

Un Chien Anadlou Reaction

Image
If I were to watch the film alone I would not think about the meaning behind some of the scenes in the film. Some scenes that I found weird are the ants coming out of the hole in his hand and the piano with the two men holding onto a rope. After going over the meanings behind some those scenes with the class, I got a better understanding about what was happening and why. But I do not think that I can watch another film similar to this one because I was very confused.

Franz Marc "The Yellow Cow"

Image
Title: "The Yellow Cow" Created By: Franz Marc Written By: Madison Herley I choose the painting "The Yellow Cow" created by Franz Marc because it was a good use of colors and was very unique from the other artists we have studied. This painting in particular is one of Marc most well known piece and is a good example of illustrating animals in Expressionist style. An Expressionist style can be defined as distorting natural images. Vincent Van Gogh early art paintings are examples of Expressionism as well. I really enjoyed the use of color in this painting and unusually colors. For example, cows are always painted as black and white since that is what they are represented as in reality. However, Marc used a bright yellow color for the cow along with a bright blue on the cows stomach. Furthermore, I really like how Marc used a different bright and vivid colors in his paintings. Therefore, I choose this painting because my eyes were drawn to the bright yell...

Red Deer II

Image
I like Franz Marc's work because it is very colorful and beautiful. I like this work because of how he illustrates the deer. Their shapes are slender and elegant. I like how he made the subject a focal point, and the design of the background. The clouds are fun and whimsical. His work is simple, but has enough detail that makes it refined.

Dog Lying in the Snow Franz Marc

Image
Franz Marc was a German painter who was part of the German Expressionist movement. He preferred to paint animals because he felt closer to nature and to God. His painting, Dog Lying in the Snow , was finished in 1911. This was a painting of Marc's own Siberian Shepherd dog, Russi. This artwork is different from Franz Marc's other works because it isn't as colorful or abstract. You can easily tell in this painting that it is a dog lying in the snow surrounded by trees compared to his other paintings that are more abstract. This is one of Marc's most popular paintings and I really enjoyed it too.

Deer in the Snow by Franz Marc

Image
This 1911 artwork, Deer in the Snow,  was painted by Franz Marc during a period of new inspiration. During this time, Marc became fascinated with incorporating animals in his artworks. Animal themes held great significance to Marc because he considered them much more spiritual than human beings. The colors in this painting express symbolism. The white and blue both symbolize a sense masculinity. Deer in the Snow shows everyone what the natural atmosphere of deer looks like. I especially enjoyed this painting because of the shapes and texture of the background. I love how the various shapes come together and make up a realistic snow background. This painting caught my eye due to the colors of the background. Most of Marc's paintings are full of different bright colors but this painting is not. I appreciate the uniqueness of this particular painting.

Franz Marc

Image
I liked this picture because I love how the picture looks like rocks but also has the shape of tiger as well.  The colors he used are nice mono tone colors but also they all seem to pop as well.  He's use of blending is also really nice beach it helps the picture all flow and not be to blocky.

Franz Marc The Yellow Cow

Image
I really like this photo by Franz Marc called "The Yellow Cow", because of his color. He really is able to give a picture for you to understand and enjoy but its unique in the fact that it has irregular shapes and colors for your average painting. I like how the objects and the cow in the picture are colors they would never be, just to pop out at you and give you more insight of how creative Franz was.

"The Red Deer" by Franz Marc

Image
I chose this Marc painting for a number of reasons. I like the warm colors he chose to use for the two deer and how he contrasts that with the cooler colors that the hills and sky in the background are composed of. I also really liked how he made the shape of the hills and both deer very smooth-like, while the sky looks puffy and sort of dissolves into the top of the hills. All together I really liked this painting.

Abstract Expressionism

Image
I wasn't sure of the new theme for this week's blog so I blogged about the next subject which may be Abstract Expressionism. This piece is called "The Deep" by Jackson Pollock, an oil on canvas painting with only white, black, and touches of yellow. White was supposed to be the symbol of purity and black would represent death. The colors were to blend into gray to deepen the picture and thoughts of the viewer. I really like the simplicity of the painting and how it holds deep meanings.

Un Chien Andalou

Image
I thought the movie was weird. it seemed sequential but many parts I don't understand. whats the meaning behind the eyeball being slashed? what do the dead mules symbolize? why did the girl in the traffic have significance to the rest of the story? was she the same person as the girl in the apartment? It was certainly creative.

Un Chien Andalou

Image
Un Chien Andalou was a unique video and my reaction consisted of shock mixed with interest. It was an interesting way to put images and scenes together to create something that really made the viewers think about what they were seeing. There were many points of symbolism and though they were bizarre, they were captivating. I thought the ants in the hand was particularly fascinating. It represented the itch or desire to kill or hinted that the person had sexual desires. It could be interpreted in many different ways. Although I would never watch this film on my own, I am glad it was shown to us because I did find it very interesting and different than something I would have picked to watch for myself.

The Face of War

Image
The film Un Chien Andalou was an interesting film that really makes you think about what you're watching. Some of the scenes in this film just looked like nonsense with different things put together but after watching the film for a second time, many of the scenes symbolize something else. The most interesting scene to me is when the man is trying to get to the woman but being held back by the priests, pianos, and dead deer.

Un Chien Andalou

Image
The film Un Chien Andalou was a very strange film and I have never seen anything like it before. Being an art film, there was a lot of symbolism. Before we discussed it in class, I just thought it was random objects that kept appearing, but it was actually symbolism that Dali was trying to get across. It was also odd that there was no beginning, middle, and end of the film. There was no climax of the film either the plot was steady the whole time. It was a very interesting movie but it is a good representation of what an art movie is.

Un Chien Andalou -Salvador Dali

Image
Un Chien Andalou by Salvador Dali really made me think. The entire time I was watching the film I was absolutely perplexed. I kept trying to piece everything together, but was not even sure any of the scenes fit together. At one point I questioned if the scenes were occurring out of order or backwards. The scene transitions were in Spanish which did not help my cause. However, I think the silence throughout the film helped to keep the audience interested. Personally if there was noise that went along with that first scene (women's eye being cut) I would have passed out. I also had questions in regards to the characters. I was not sure if the same characters were continuing throughout or if they changed, they all looked so similar. I also noticed a lot of continuity throughout the film. For example, the striped box was a constant staple. What it's purpose was I have no idea. After the film I had many questions. Like what was the armpit hair, donkeys, ants, or hand for? I fee...

Un Chien Andalou

Image
The film, Un Chien Andalou, was one of the strangest films I have seen. Overall, I think I had a positive experience watching it, despite being disturbed by it at some points. If the film were silent, I am not sure that I would have liked it as much. However, I felt that the addition of the music made the actions that were happening more intense and dramatic.

Un Chien Andalou Film Reaction

Image
The Burning Giraffe by Salvador Dali  The 1929 film, Un Chien Andalou , is unlike any film I have ever watched before. I was definitely not expecting to witness a woman's eyeball being sliced open with a razor in one of the opening scenes. Personally, I thought a few of the scenes were strange and uncomfortable. These feelings were especially expressed after watching the scene of the male character grabbing the female characters breasts. It seemed as if the female did not want him doing that, yet he did it anyway. The scene I found most interesting was the one with the character's hand being shown with a hole in the middle of it and a pile of ants crawling out from inside the hole. This scene successfully represents Christianity. Un Chien Andalou was directed by Luis Bunuel and the artist known as Salvador Dali. Dali's goal for this film was to present a sense of mystery and illogicality. Overall, I believe Dali and Bunuel accomplished this.

Un Chien Andalou Film Reaction

Image
The Dream Caused by the Flight of a Bee around a Pomegranate a Second Before Awakening by Salvador Dali was created through  dream imagery. In this painting Dali was inspired by multiple sources. Like  Hieronymus Bosch water creature spewing out other creatures. The  two tigers from a Ringling Bros, and Barnum-Bailey, circus poster. The background elephant was from  Bernini's elephant-monument that was actually an elephant that was executed, but was also Dali's symbol for  of war and destruction. War is also put into this piece because of the gun. What also makes this painting dream like is the  pomegranate bursting open into the creatures and the gravity  defying woman on the sea. The Film was actually so weird that I had nightmares about it. When i came into the room I just saw this guy chasing this woman around but he looked crazed and just wanted to touch and eventually kill her. Turning this video to be more religious I saw the signs...

Un Chien Andalou

Image
I thought the video was kinda creepy but interestingly. There was a lot of symbolism in the video but I wasn't very intrigued by the video.

Un Chien Andalou Film Reaction

Image
After watching the video Un Chien Andalou, I honestly felt off. The video was intriguing by its very creepy aspects, and also by its perspective and what the certain scenes are trying to represent and tell you. I felt off after because some of the things that occurred in that video, like the man touching the female and her not seeming to be fond of it, was what really bothered me. Too many gut turning things occurred at once during this film which made it hard for me to be able to enjoy. Though I found it very interesting, and it was not horrible, it just was not something I enjoyed nor would I want to watch again. The watch, priest, moth, and female back representations were very well played, and made the point. All around, this is a very interesting video, and I would suggest for someone to maybe watch it once for the sake of perspective. Otherwise, it wasn't pleasant for me.

Un Chien Andalou

Image
Tuna Fishing (1967) by Salvador Dali Un Chien Andalou was an interesting and bizarre film. There was a lot of symbolism, such as with the ants in the palm, the woman's armpit hair becoming the man's mouth, and the dead donkeys on the piano. There are so many ways to interpret the film. One could say that with the man's lustful ways, he is going against the church. When he is dragging the pianos with dead donkeys, the piano, and the priests. These are popular images within the church. The donkey plays a large role in biblical times, and music is a large part of the church. The woman settles for another man on the beach. The box and what the man was wearing comes up again.

Un Chien Andalou

Image
The Burning Giraffe  Un chien Andalou is a 1929 surrealist short film that was completely silent, other than dramatic background music, and in black and white. Personally, I felt the film was very weird. The film was very random, although had many symbolic actions throughout the entire film. The beginning of the film starts off with a man sharpening a razor, and then shows the man cutting an eye with the razor, which looks like the eye of the woman who is sitting next to him, but it was actually the eye of an animal. The end of the film shows two men, one in which symbolizes a father and the other a son, and the father figure is somewhat punishing the son, making him take off the clothing he was wearing and putting him in the corner. The son figure then shoots the father figure out of anger.

un chien andalou

Image
The Temptation of Saint Anthony: Salvatore Dali After watching the film a second time, I noticed different events that took place. The first time I watched the film when the two men that looked similar to one another were having a stand down in a bedroom alone after the one man proceeded to make fun of and antagonize, and yell at the other. This whole film is completely silent except for the music that would speed up and slow down when parts of the film would become more intense. the man who was aggressive resembled a father and the man being woken up out of his sleep, in his bed represents the mans son. the scene shows the son pick up a gun and murder his father after having resentment of his parent. it shows how the son is calm but shows the willingness to harm someone in his eyes. His body also tense and approached his father prepared to kill. he shoots his father and the father collapses to the floor. The first time I watched the video, the men resembled each other so much I ...

Un Chien Andalou Film Reaction

Image
"The Face of War"  -Salvador Dali My personal reaction to the film of Un Chien Andalou was wow, no words to describe this film to be quite honest. I love the horror this mini film brought, since I'm obsess with horror movies, this short film gave me a peek at how art can involve horror themes into a mini film. The director of this short film stated that the goal was to " Plunge like a dagger into the heart of Paris". After watching In Chien Andalou short film several times I feel like I always pick up creepy imagine that I didn't notice the previous times I watched the film. My two favorite parts of this short film will have to be when the man slice the woman eye which I think it was the perfect way to introduce the horror of the film with that scene. My second favorite scene of this film was when the ants ran out of the hand. I personally picked Salvador Dali "The Face of War" because it ties in perfectly with film of Un Chien Andalou.
